    Beech Tree Teachings of Resilience in Heat Waves and Flash Droughts.

    The beech tree’s resilience is tested by disturbances in heat waves and flash droughts. Research by physicist and environmental data scientist Blandine Courcot at DOT-Lab’s forest research site (Quebec, Canada) shows that these trees, a living being, can withstand brief dry periods under moderate stress. However, excessive stress can be fatal. From 2017 to 2020, water potential, soil temperature and weather data were collected to understand this resilience. Courcot’s findings demonstrate American Beech trees in a northern climate maintain stable soil conditions despite high hydric stress and heat. Her research inspired the outdoor art installation ”devenir-hêtre (beech-becoming)” at the Fondation Grantham in May 2023 (Quebec). Ælab and MÉDIANE’s research team presented her data as sensory experiences in an outdoor art installation in a rural forest. It explored the beech tree’s delicate balancing between stress and strength amid changing climates, blending scientific insight with creative expression for public engagement.

    Découlant de l’installation éponyme à Espace pour la vie – Jardin Botanique de Montréal (juillet 2021), cette cartographie s’inscrit dans une approche de la recherche-création processuelle, spéculative et exploratoire.

    Différentes expériences climatiques y sont entrecroisées: un texte créatif de chantal t paris (chercheure et étudiante en Études et pratiques des arts, UQAM), les résultats partiels d’entretiens avec les publics en lien avec la traduction visuelle des données recueillies sur le site de l’installation par des capteurs d’une station météo artisanale.

    Cette cartographie avait été additionnée d’une page Web où se trouvaient les réponses à la question posée, ce qui marque la lancée d’une série de publications annuelles.

    Ada X soutient des projets issus de la communauté en lien avec son mandat et la thématique de sa programmation de façon ponctuelle. La « sympoïèse d’un cercle de lecture ambulatoire » a été proposée par Gisèle Trudel et Susan Turcot, avec la complicité de Sylvie Laplante et de Émilie Mouchous, et a été réalisée en partenariat avec MÉDIANE – Chaire de recherche du Canada en arts, écotechnologies de pratique et changements climatiques (dir. Gisèle Trudel), avec l’appui du CRSH, de la FCI et du FRQSC. S’inspirant de Staying With the Trouble de Donna Haraway, les participantes ont réalisé une série d’oeuvres sonores au fil de l’atelier.

    Quelques mots des artistes : « Ce cercle de lecture ambulatoire emprunte des voies processuelles pour induire une multitude de moments de partage. D’abord la première rencontre s’est déroulée sous le signe de la marche, en solo et en groupe, dans une écoute activée par la semelle des pieds, les mots de Haraway s’infiltrant par les oreilles et dans la spatiotemporalité du Jardin botanique. Les rendez-vous sonores subséquents avec chaque participante, en prise sur le vif et la vie, ont eu lieu dehors, à d’autres endroits, près de roches, de plans d’eaux, de semences, d’insectes ou de terrains en friche. Les captations réalisées en plan-séquence, accompagnées de voix plus-qu’humaines et quelquefois humaines, sollicitent les sons d’un agir en mouvement, la puissance surprenante de-avec-en l’écoute de corps et de situations. »

  • Dîner avec Carya ovata (2020)

    Dessins de noix d’arbres et de typographies sur papier Kraft, des « compost-ions » réalisées à partir de pages Web, un échantillonnage visuel provenant de groupes de soutien, de personnes et de sites de vente ayant un intérêt pour les arbres fruitiers. Les dessins jouent sur un désir de rapprochement avec l’arbre qui est ailleurs. L’invitation gourmande d’un trait, un relai analogique-numérique. Marque-pages mûris, pour nourrir corps et esprits.

  • bruit gris (2020)

    Dans ce texte, je retrace mon premier contact avec le concept de sympoïèse pensé par Beth Dempster. Après un bref retour sur le concept d’autopoïèse, je poursuis ensuite avec l’analyse du caractère sans frontières (boundarylessness) de la sympoïèse, telle que présentée par Dempster dans un schéma qui accompagne un de ses textes (1999). L’absence de frontières peut laisser perplexe. Comment s’allier ou s’agencer s’il n’y a pas de distinctions ? Comment s’active un partage ?

  • les arbres de Montréal (2019)

    Série de dessins effectués sur des sacs d’épicerie en papier Kraft trouvés qui rappellent le format d’un livre. Les dessins sont basés sur les photos d’arbres prises à Montréal venant du livre Les arbres de Montréal de Martin Gaudet (2007), acheté dans une vente de garage pour 1$.

    Set of drawings done on found Kraft paper grocery bags which recall a book shape. The drawings are based on the photos of trees in Montreal as published in the book by Martin Gaudet, bought at a yard sale for $1.

  • cycles (2002)

    Cycles is an exhibition that considers the shifting relationship between assembled structures, the cross-purposing of objects and the experience of the viewer/participant where interactivity is never an autonomous terrain.

    Gregory’s 12 Motor Bells is a computer-controlled electromechanical audio installation where microprocessor technology, machines, intimacy and the human body collide.

    Screen, a telerobotic Net artwork by Todd, consists of robotic armatures that control a series of events inside a boxed grid-like construction. The work sporadically comes alive for interaction via a web page interface and is also enhanced
    through a performative presence for limited time screenings.

    Web project

    The project consists of visualizing the city of Montréal in a sci-fi eco-architecture scenario for today.

    A hommage to Frederick Law Olmsted, the American founder of landscape architecture, who designed both Central Park (NYC) and Mount-Royal Park (Montréal), in 1858 and 1876 respectively.

    Presentation venue

    This Web project developped especially for the group exhibition Emplacement/Déplacement, by curators Sylvie Parent and Valérie Lamontagne, presented at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, September 2001.

    Web project

    In July 2001, we were invited by Boréal Art/Nature to research and do the pre-production for a new web project, based on graphic work of Ernst Haeckel, a 19th-century artist and biologist (1834-1919).

    Original objects and natural phenomena discovered and observed on site at La Minerve, Québec are digitized with a video camera and scanner onto a portable computer. The juxtaposition of these elements are grouped into a series of 2D computer studies for the web, including animations, video and text, inspired by the progression of associative and formal lithographic works which make up the KunstFormen der Natur series elaborated by Haeckel from 1899 to 1904.

    Our fascination for this portfolio of strange and beautiful imagery is because it is usually invisible to the naked eye.
