MÉDIANE, la Chaire de recherche du Canada en arts, écotechnologies de pratique et changements climatiques (pilotée par l’artiste et professeure Gisèle Trudel et les équipes) est heureuse de vous inviter au lancement de sa nouvelle publication bilingue Cartographie quatre:sept /seven questions*. Cette ultime édition présente un survol des installations in situ, des aires relationnelles incluant une collecte de commentaires des publics à un entretien semi-dirigé composé de sept questions. Les personnes collaboratrices clés de la Chaire ont été invitées à y participer et leur réponse figure dans ce recueil.
Ce moment festif sera également l’occasion d’honorer et de remercier actant·es, chercheur·euses, artistes, étudiant·es, collaborateur·rices et partenaires ayant contribué aux activités de la chaire pendant l’ensemble de la recherche-création. L’approche est fondée sur une collaboration arts technologiques/sciences forestières qui explore les opérations inouïes des arbres et forêts en situation de climats changeants.
/ Launch of the publication and closing of MÉDIANE’s research-creation
MÉDIANE, the Canada Research Chair in Arts, Ecotechnologies of Practice and Climate Change (led by artist and professor Gisèle Trudel and the teams), is happy to invite you to the launch of its new bilingual publication Cartographie quatre:sept /seven questions*. This new edition presents an overview of the site-specific installations, these relational zones included collecting peoples comments to a semi-structured interview consisting of seven questions. Key collaborators of the Chair were invited to participate, and their responses are included in this publication. This event will be the occasion to celebrate and thank actants, researchers, artists, students, collaborators, and partners who contributed to the Chair’s activities throughout the entire research-creation. The approach is based on a collaboration between technological arts and forest sciences, to explore the extraordinary operations of trees and forests in changing climates.

La Fondation Grantham pour l’art et l’environnement crée une alliance unique avec MÉDIANE, la Chaire de recherche du Canada en arts, écotechnologies de pratique et changements climatiques, afin de présenter pour la toute première fois l’exposition-laboratoire Devenir-Hêtre, réalisée par la cellule de recherche artistique Ælab et les équipes.
La troisième itération in situ de l’installation annuelle de la Chaire MÉDIANE, une collaboration continue avec Smartforests Canada, aura lieu en forêt. Cette fois, l’accent est porté sur la visualisation de périodes de sécheresse du hêtre. En situation de climats changeants, quels sont les effets du manque d’eau sur cet arbre?
Grâce à une collaboration avec Blandine Courcot (scientifique, DOT-Lab, Université TÉLUQ) et Marc-André Cossette (artiste et candidat au doctorat, Université Concordia), les compositions de variations chiffrées en couleurs, formes, lignes et particules expriment les forces et les seuils de l’arbre et de son milieu. Dans un rapprochement artistique avec l’essence d’arbre Fagus grandifolia, l’oeuvre audiovisuelle est présentée à l’extérieur dans une structure d’échafaudages, un chantier ouvert au dialogue entre collectivités.
Pendant l’exposition-laboratoire, Ælab résidera à la Fondation Grantham pour poursuivre son travail d’expérimentation artistique. Le duo sera présent pour des échanges informels pendant les visites des publics. Les publics pourront participer sur une base volontaire à des entretiens semi-dirigés de courte durée concernant leur expérience de l’oeuvre.

• deux rencontres/discussions portant sur des projets arts/sciences, le premier avec Marc-André Cossette, Gisèle Trudel et Blandine Courcot, le deuxième est le Projet Manicouagan présenté par Éric Desmarais, Erwan Gavelle et Kanatakhatsus Meunier;
• l’atelier/conversation Pheno-visioning with birch avec Susan Turcot;
• deux performances sonores avec Stephanie Castonguay, Mimi et Stéphane Claude.
De plus, la Station climatique mobile, une micro-installation nomade de MÉDIANE, fera des escales avec une équipe à vélo dans l’espace public de Drummondville au mois de juin.
À propos de MÉDIANE, Ælab, Smartforestset DOT-Lab MÉDIANE, la Chaire de recherche du Canada en arts, écotechnologies de pratique et changements climatiques est portée par Gisèle Trudel et les équipes qui travaillent activement à créer un dialogue entre les données scientifiques portant sur les dynamiques de la forêt, les arts technologiques et les expériences des publics. Cela a pour objectif de favoriser la circulation d’idées et d’actions créatives relatives aux climats changeants.
Gisèle Trudel, professeure à l’École des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’UQAM et membre chercheuse de Hexagram, fonde avec Stéphane Claude la cellule de recherche artistique Ælab en 1996. Stéphane Claude est compositeur, ingénieur du son, consultant spécialisé indépendant et chercheur responsable de l’aire audio du centre d’artistes OBORO. Leur pratique en documentaire expérimental réunit médias analogiques/numériques et engagement collectif. Conférences, performances et expositions sont présentées régulièrement à Montréal et ailleurs. Piloté à l’UQAM par l’écologiste forestier et professeur du Département des sciences biologiques Daniel Kneeshaw, le réseau scientifique pancanadien Smartforestsdocumente les variations climatiques des eaux, des sols et des forêts au pays.
Professeur, scientifique et membre chercheur de Smartforests, Nicolas Bélanger dirige le DOT-Lab. Ce laboratoire sur la science des données de l’Université TÉLUQ est formé de chercheurs dont les activités de recherche s’unissent autour du développement et de l’utilisation d’outils propres à la science des données.

From May 11 to 28, 2023, the Fondation Grantham pour l’art et l’environnement is creating a unique alliance with MEDIANE, the Canada Research Chair in Arts, Ecotechnologies of Practice and Climate Change, to present for the very first time the exhibition-laboratory Devenir-Hêtre, by the artist research unit Ælab and teams.
The third in situ iteration of the annual installation of MEDIANE, an ongoing collaboration with Smartforests Canada, will take place in a forest. This time, the focus is on visualizing drought periods of the beech tree. In changing climates, what are the effects of lack of water on this tree?
Thanks to a collaboration with Blandine Courcot (scientist, DOT-Lab, TÉLUQ University) and Marc-André Cossette (artist and doctoral candidate, Concordia University), the compositions made with numbers are variations in colors, shapes, lines and particles that express the forces and the thresholds of the tree and its environment. In an artistic connection with the tree essence of Fagus grandifolia, the audiovisual work is presented outside in a scaffolding structure, a site open to construct dialogues between collectivities.
During the exhibition-laboratory, Ælab will reside at the Grantham Foundation to continue to work on their artistic experimentation. The duo will be present for informal exchanges during public visits. Visitors will be able to participate on a voluntary basis in short semi-directed interviews concerning their experience of the artwork.

– the workshop/conversation Pheno-visioning with birch with Susan Turcot;
– and finally, two sound performances with Stephanie Castonguay, Mimi and Stéphane Claude.
Furthermore, the Mobile Climate Station, a nomadic micro-installation of MEDIANE, will make stops with a bike team in public space of Drummondville in June.
Ælab is the artistic research unit co-founded by Gisèle Trudel and Stéphane Claude in 1996 who practice experimental documentary. She is an artist, professor at the École des arts visuels et médiatiques, UQAM, and MÉDIANE Chair (2020-2025). He is a composer, sound engineer and head audio researcher at OBORO. The duo were laureates of the Foundation’s Creation Prize in 2022.

Ada X soutient des projets issus de la communauté en lien avec son mandat et la thématique de sa programmation de façon ponctuelle. La « sympoïèse d’un cercle de lecture ambulatoire » a été proposée par Gisèle Trudel et Susan Turcot, avec la complicité de Sylvie Laplante et de Émilie Mouchous, et a été réalisée en partenariat avec MÉDIANE – Chaire de recherche du Canada en arts, écotechnologies de pratique et changements climatiques (dir. Gisèle Trudel), avec l’appui du CRSH, de la FCI et du FRQSC. S’inspirant de Staying With the Trouble de Donna Haraway, les participantes ont réalisé une série d’oeuvres sonores au fil de l’atelier.
Quelques mots des artistes : « Ce cercle de lecture ambulatoire emprunte des voies processuelles pour induire une multitude de moments de partage. D’abord la première rencontre s’est déroulée sous le signe de la marche, en solo et en groupe, dans une écoute activée par la semelle des pieds, les mots de Haraway s’infiltrant par les oreilles et dans la spatiotemporalité du Jardin botanique. Les rendez-vous sonores subséquents avec chaque participante, en prise sur le vif et la vie, ont eu lieu dehors, à d’autres endroits, près de roches, de plans d’eaux, de semences, d’insectes ou de terrains en friche. Les captations réalisées en plan-séquence, accompagnées de voix plus-qu’humaines et quelquefois humaines, sollicitent les sons d’un agir en mouvement, la puissance surprenante de-avec-en l’écoute de corps et de situations. »

Process-oriented and informal in nature, the research and production of this work with immersive sound, moving image, drawing and light is informed by the realities of “gray waters” in various states of composition, decomposition and recomposition. The source material originates in the « Eco Machines » system, pioneered by biologist and ecologist Dr. John Todd situated situated at the rest area of Sharon, Vermont and the Station d’épuration des eaux usées, an industrial system for the city of Montreal. The project is extended with images and sounds from the deserts of southwestern USA.
The project finds its inspiration in the concept of the transduction as defined by French philosopher Gilbert Simondon (1928-1989), by which nature, information and technology co-evolve. The series was initially performed in an intimate setting, disrupting the greek root of the word ecology, eikos, which means « house ».

This documentary is a small sampling about the life work of biologist Dr. John Todd (recipient of the 2008 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Award) and the ecoactivist writer Nancy Jack Todd.
It is part of the process-oriented cycle of microevents entitled light sweet cold dark crude LSCDC (2006-ongoing) that includes immersive sound, moving image, drawing and light that is informed by the transformations of waste water in various states of composition, decomposition and recomposition.
